Gene therapy clinical trials in Belgium Since March 1996, 26 gene therapy protocols have been assessed in Belgium (Table 1). Twenty-one of these protocols were multicenter. All trials were to be carried out in academic hospitals and notified for "contained uses of genetically modified micro-organisms". Eight protocols were also notified for "deliberate release of genetically modified micro-organisms for research and development purposes". Table 2 illustrates the most relevant clinical data of the trials. Most protocols aimed at cancer therapy. Sixteen of them used viral vectors.
