GMO products approved under Regulation 258/97 Before May 1997, prior to the coming into force of the Regulation (EC) 258/97 on Novel Foods and Novel Food Ingredients, two genetically modified plants have been authorised under Directive 90/220/EEC to be placed on the European market for the use in food: a soya variety and a maize variety (Table 1). Since May 1997 several products have been notified by the Commission as being substantially equivalent according to article 5 of the Regulation (EC) N° 258/97 (Table 2). Some other applications have been approved under article 7 of the Regulation (EC) 258/97 (Table 3). Last but not least, a few other applications are still awaiting approval (Table 4: data from the European Commission Website).
