Guidance notes for the safety assessment of genetically modified crops for food
and feed use

Introductory note
The Division of Biosafety and Biotechnology (SBB) has coordinated in 2003 the drafting of guidance documents for the safety assessment of genetically modified crops for food and feed use. These documents aim at providing guidance to notifiers and biosafety assessors regarding the type and extent of studies that have to be carried out to enable the conduct of the safety assessment.
The documents
have been prepared with the support of scientists chosen from the
list of experts jointly established by the SBB and the Biosafety Advisory
Council.
To this end, 5 working
groups have been set up .
Within the Scientific Committee "Transgenic Plants" a working group drafted guidelines on:
- Molecular characterisation of transgenic plants to be placed on the market
Within the Scientific Committee "GM Foods and Feeds" 4 working groups developed guidance notes respectively on the following topics:
- Toxicological aspects of genetically modified foods and feeds
- Allergenic aspects of genetically modified foods and feeds
- Nutritional aspects of genetically modified foods
- Nutritional aspects of genetically modified feeds
