Containment measures

According to the Belgian protocol for transgenic sugar beets a border of ryegrass or naked soil of 5 m needs to be guaranteed. If harvest or destruction of the trial is planned after the start of the sugar beet dig up campaign an additional isolation distance of 25 m to neighbouring sugar beet crops needs to be applied. Sugar beets are only tested during the vegetative stage. Bolters and volunteer plants will be destroyed, the vegetative material by chopping and incorporation in the soil.

Monitoring measures

After the trial the field will be followed up during 2 years. The first year after cultivation of the GM beets only a monocot can be cultivated. The second year all crops except beet are allowed.
